In today’s gospel reading we hear this remarkable statement on the lips of Jesus, “Do you think that I came to bring peace to earth? No indeed! I came to make people choose sides.” Among the paradoxes of the Christian faith, we find that the God who comforts the disturbed also disturbs the comfortable, and that the gospel of reconciliation creates division.
